What to Expect After Your Carpet Is Installed

A cozy and comfortable carpet is a great addition to many homes. It provides insulation, style, and warmth. However, after you've installed the perfect carpet for your space, you'll want to make sure that there are no issues in quality or function.

While carpet installations are simple and routine for a professional flooring team, you may find issues down the road. Some of the problems may be entirely normal and require only a little bit of effort on your part to fix. But other issues with your carpet may require additional professional attention.

We'll explain the carpeting installation process and some of the most common problems you might find with your carpet after a period of time. We'll also go over what to do after a new carpet is installed and you've found issues, like shedding or noticeable seams.

The Carpet Installation Process

Carpet installations can be tricky if you don't have any experience with them. Hiring a professional installation team is often the best course of action to avoid costly mistakes from DIYing the project yourself. During the process, the installers will correctly measure, cut, and stretch your carpet to ensure it fits perfectly within your space. When properly installed, you won't notice any gaps, wrinkles, or looseness with the carpeting.

Possible Issues You May Notice

There are a few issues that you may encounter if you have carpeting in your home. With new carpeting, you might notice a few common problems that are common to the installation process. You'll probably wonder what to do after a new carpet is installed and you find issues. Luckily most of the issues you encounter after an installation are easily resolved. However, after you've had your carpeting for a while, you may notice more serious issues that might need to be addressed by a professional.

Shedding Fibers

You may be concerned about what to do after a new carpet is installed and you discover loose fibers that appear over the floor. Shedding fibers are one of the most common issues resulting from new carpeting. However, this problem is nothing to worry about, as it's not an indication of the quality of the installation or material.

During the manufacturing process, the fibers are cut to a specified length (the pile height). This uniform cutting process results in loose fibers that will appear as shedding. However, with a few vacuuming sessions, this issue should resolve itself.

Sprouting/Snags

Depending on your carpet type, you may notice snags or sprouting from the fibers on your flooring. These snags look out of place, giving your carpet an unkempt appearance. However, this is an entirely normal issue, which you can solve with a simple snip of the scissors.

Some types of carpeting are prone to snagging from pet claws, furniture, and even normal wear. If you want to prevent these snags from occurring, you can try to keep your pets' claws trimmed and avoid dragging furniture across the carpet. Otherwise, you can trim the snags to align with the correct pile length.

Matting

After a length of time after installation, you may notice matting in your carpet. While it's certainly not ideal, it's a usual occurrence for high-traffic areas or places with heavy furniture. If you want to keep your carpet looking plush, then you should consider placing rugs in places with a lot of foot traffic. You should also follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions, as the wrong technique may cause your fibers to unravel and become crushed.

Matting is also more common in certain types of carpet styles. It's important to carefully choose the carpet you'd like installed, as a durable option can save you time and money. Wide-looped pile carpeting is usually the type most prone to this type of issue, as well as snagging. The most durable carpets will have a low or medium-length cut pile.

The Appearance of Seams

Unless you're carpeting an incredibly small space, carpeting seams are normal and unavoidable. However, depending on the carpet's color and texture, seams may seem more noticeable than usual. To prevent unsightly seams, you should consider the type of carpeting you'd like to install. If you already have the carpet installed, rugs and furniture placement could help to make the seams less noticeable.

Filtration Soiling

After a period of time, you may notice gray discoloration around the edges of your carpet and near HVAC vents. This issue is the result of poor airflow that has been concentrated directly at these carpet spots. To prevent this problem from occurring, you'll need to regularly change out air filters and vacuum your carpets.

Wrinkles

Sometimes a carpet may have noticeable wrinkles or buckle up in areas. In this instance, the carpet is no longer tightly attached to the adhesive backing, which can be due to multiple factors. Excessive moisture after a carpet cleaning, dragging large furniture, and high temperatures and humidity can cause wrinkling.

With this issue, it may resolve on its own. If you notice the issue after a cleaning, wait a few days to see if your carpet returns to normal. However, you may need to contact a professional carpet installation company to return your carpet to its original condition. In serious cases, you may need to install a new carpet.

You may wonder what to do after a new carpet is installed and you notice minor issues. In most cases, vacuuming and proper cleaning can prevent and solve these issues. Shedding, sprouting, and matting are common issues. However, with some problems, like wrinkling and buckling, you may need to contact a professional for help.
