What Are the Different Carpet Fiber Types?

When you’re shopping for new carpet, the right fiber can help you balance comfort, durability, style and budget. Carpet fibers affect how your carpet looks, feels and performs in your space, from busy hallways and stairs to cozy bedrooms and living areas. Here’s a closer look at some of the most popular carpet fiber options to help you compare your choices. 

Nylon 

Nylon offers some of the highest durability among synthetic carpet fibers, and treated nylon fibers offer good stain resistance. This type of fiber offers excellent resilience, bouncing back well after foot traffic, furniture pressure and everyday use. While these carpets have a higher up-front price, they are ideal for high-traffic areas like hallways and staircases. 

Karastan's Kashmere is a great example of a branded nylon carpet fiber. These carpets feel plusher than standard Nylon carpets, with a softness comparable to cashmere and EasyClean® stain protection for everyday spills.

Polyester (PET)

Polyester fibers offer plenty of color, texture and style options without taking too high a toll on your budget. They offer high stain resistance, even compared to materials like Nylon, making them ideal for spaces where spills are likely. In terms of durability and resilience, they do not bounce back from heavy foot traffic as well as Nylon, so they're better suited to lower-traffic spaces. 

Some Polyester carpet options add extra value with branded fiber technology. Examples include EnviroStrand® and EverStrand® by Mohawk. Both of these fiber types consist at least partially of recycled plastic bottles, making them a more sustainable solution. They're also budget-friendly options that resist water-based stains. They are still best suited for spaces where stain resistance and budget matter more than heavy-traffic durability.

Polypropylene

When you choose a polypropylene or Olefin-fiber carpet, you get an extremely budget-friendly option. However, as with many economical options, there are a few fit factors to keep in mind. These carpets are more likely to flatten in busy areas. While they offer great resistance to moisture and water-based stains, they absorb and attract oil. The good news is that they don't bleach or fade easily, making them ideal for high-UV zones.

These carpets offer many benefits, but they work best in low-traffic areas.

SmartStrand® or Triexta (PTT)

SmartStrand® or triexta is a subclass of polyester that has the best traits of both polyester and nylon. It has the stain resistance of polyester and durability closer to that of nylon. The resulting fibers are softer and more pliable. It offers durability and stain resistance and is available in a variety of colors and patterns. 

Which Carpet Type is Right for You?

When deciding which carpet fibers are best for your space, considerations to consider include:

• Traffic level: High-traffic areas require a durable solution, such as nylon or triexta. Lower-traffic areas can use a less resilient fiber like polyester.
• Budget: Options like nylon and triexta cost more but are economical in the long term due to their lifespans. Polyester offers the best combination of durability and cost-effectiveness, while polypropylene is highly affordable but is better suited for lower-traffic areas.
• Color and texture: Different carpet fibers have vastly different color and design options. Triexta and polyester offer excellent softness, while nylon may be resilient but won't be as soft.
